1960年，輟學。正式深入接觸烏迪‧格斯利所有民歌創作。

唱針停止時，我驚呆了－－不知自已醉了沒？
我聽到的全是烏迪自創的歌子，教我頭暈目眩，喘息不止，大地似乎開裂了。
我不敢置信。格斯利竟有這般控制力，他是如此詩意、硬朗、富節奏性，力度如此之大，聲嗓如同地鑽。
他的獨特風格，他唱每１個字的方式，全征服了我。
歌曲本身，蘊涵無限人性，沒有１首是平凡的。烏迪‧格斯利把擋住去路的任何事物全砸得粉碎。
對我而言，這像是天啟，像將重錨投進港口水域。
他的歌讓任何事物嘎１聲停頓了。
透過其作品，我的世界觀便有了中心。
我對烏迪知之甚少，我從未見過他，卻可以清晰地想像出他的臉，他看來宛若我爹年輕模樣…………
朋友老潘Jon Pankake當他的面吐槽：
「你很努力，可你永遠成不了
烏迪‧格斯利Woody Guthrie。」
老潘提到１個叫傑克‧艾略特Ramblin' Jack Elliott的傢伙：
「曾像你１樣，當然現在已不了……」
他從未聽過這名。
老潘領他回舊書店樓上的家，
播放了傑克的碟子。

碟子開始轉，傑克的歌聲炸開在房間里。

天哪，這傢伙太偉大了。
他聽來像烏迪，但單薄些，卻較狂怒。
我當下就愣住了。
多數民謠樂手總等著你走近他；傑克卻蹦出來攫住你。
老潘是對的，艾略特遠超乎了我。
我不知老潘是鼓舞我還是打擊我。這不重要。
艾略特確實已遠遠超越了烏迪，而我仍在努力趕上格斯利。

可我務必將他從腦子逐出，忘卻這事，跟自己說：沒聽過他－－他根本不存在。
好在，他在大洋彼岸的歐洲，自我流放，美國猶不準備好接納他。
那好，我希望他待在那，我呢，仍得追循格斯利底歌。
數周之后，老潘來聽演唱，馬上指出我瞞不過他，
他說我過去總模倣格斯利，現則倣效艾略特，
問我是否已認為可以跟傑克平分秋色啦？
老潘勸我或應回頭玩搖滾………
１９６１年，從明尼亞波利赴芝加哥途中，他改了計劃，轉往紐約，
訪晤自己的音樂偶像烏迪……………………
